… Jelly Roll Morton war schon viel weiter. Bei Joplin sind die chromatischen Linien nur Übergänge, während Morton den unhaltbaren vorletzten Ton (in Rot) in dieser Linie von "The Crave" lange auskostet. Außerdem besteht das Spiel mit 3 gegen 4 hier nicht mehr nur in der bloßen Wiederholung einer 3er Phrase, sondern Morton ist komplett frei in seiner Melodie, die er unterschiedlich lang macht mit Tönen, die man nicht vorhersagen kann, gespickt mit schönen, langen Pausen, die man nicht kommen sieht. Eine Tonarten und Rhythmen durchbrechende, schöne Melodie -- eine Mondlandung in der Musik. Der Eintritt in eine neue Welt.
