I'm personally more into the first three albums they put out. That's the period I feel most of the excitement.

That backbeat - Bang! Pow! Boom!
What excites me most with this group is that heavy backbeat. While most drummers were someone far in the back helping the band keeping pace, Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste was upfront and the driving force in The Meters' gritty grooves. His rhythmic ways were leading the way through the hills and valleys of funk. Their funky wagon is dangerously rocking from side to side and Zigaboo is the man turning them over a split second before the whole stanky thing tips over.

Originally released in 1971 it is one of those rare funk singles that is only in the box of Keb Darge, DJ Shadow, Snowboy, Cut Chemist, Ian Wright and of course Adrian Gibson!

Das Publikum war ausser sich. Diejenigen darunter, die selber Musiker waren, waren einfach sprachlos vor Ehrfurcht. Einer erzählte, das er zweimal vor ergriffener Begeisterung weinen musste. Diese Band hatte ihm wieder das Gefühl zurück gegeben, dass er vor dreißig Jahren hatte, als er anfing sich ernsthaft für Musik zu interessieren - und das genau war es, was diesen Abend im Stadtgarten ausmachte: eine Zeitreise in eine Zeit, als Musiker im Schweiße ihres Angesichts und sehr viel Geduld mit ihrer Musik noch wachsen konnten und dadurch Qualitätsstandarts setzten.
